Liksom alla andra medlemmar av denna familj livn\u00e4r de sig enbart p\u00e5 blod och beh\u00f6ver en m\u00e5ltid fr\u00e5n ett av en rad ryggradsdjur f\u00f6r att kunna utvecklas mellan olika stadier och f\u00f6r att kunna f\u00f6r\u00f6ka sig.<\/p>\n

Utvecklingstiden p\u00e5verkas i h\u00f6g grad av temperaturen. Vid temperaturer under 13 \u00b0C upph\u00f6r all utveckling, honorna slutar att l\u00e4gga \u00e4gg och de \u00e4gg som har lagts kl\u00e4cks inte. Vid temperaturer \u00f6ver 36 \u00b0C leder skador p\u00e5 de bakteriella symbionterna, som hj\u00e4lper till med syntesen av mikron\u00e4rings\u00e4mnen, till minskad fruktsamhet och \u00f6verlevnad. Mellan dessa tv\u00e5 ytterligheter minskar utvecklingstiden med stigande temperatur (se nedan).<\/p>\n

Honorna beh\u00f6ver para sig minst en g\u00e5ng var 5-6:e vecka f\u00f6r att bibeh\u00e5lla full fertilitet, \u00e4ven om den naturliga parningsfrekvensen tros vara mycket h\u00f6gre.<\/p>\n

Antalet \u00e4gg som en hona l\u00e4gger per vecka p\u00e5verkas i h\u00f6g grad av temperaturen och individuella variationer. I ett varmt rum kan en enskild hona f\u00f6rv\u00e4ntas l\u00e4gga 15-25 \u00e4gg per vecka och upp till 500 \u00e4gg under hela sitt liv, s\u00e5 l\u00e4nge hon har kontinuerlig tillg\u00e5ng till mat och blir regelbundet parad.<\/p>\n
